Introduction
For a business to be successful in the long term it has to create value, not only for its shareholders but also for society. We call this Creating Shared Value and it is a fundamental part of our business strategy. Simply stated, in order to create value for our shareholders and our Company, we need to create value for the people in the countries where we are present.
Nestlé USA has released our first Creating Shared Value Report. We invite you to learn more about our initiatives in Nutrition, Health and Wellness, as well as Sustainability.
"Creating Shared Value is a very different approach to corporate social responsibility (CSR), because it is not focused on meeting a set of standard external criteria, or on philanthropy. The idea of winners and losers doesn’t fit this model of CSR."
Mark Kramer, Harvard University
Do you know of a project that will improve access to clean water, improve the lives of farmers or bring improved nutrition to communities suffering from nutritional deficits? Then nominate it for the Nestlé Prize in Creating Shared Value, which will be awarded for the first time in April 2010.

Nestlé National Day of Volunteering

Employees spent the day packing food boxes at the LA Regional Food Bank.
More than 1,000 employees participated in Nestlé’s National Day of Volunteering during the week of October 27, 2008. Employees in corporate offices, plants, distribution centers and sales offices nationwide gave their time and efforts to various non-profit organizations.
Volunteer activities ranged from sorting food at Food Banks, working with our Nestlé Adopt-A-School students, cooking at Women’s Shelters, participating in Meals on Wheels, building homes with Habitat for Humanity, donating time in Soup Kitchens, to running for causes like the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Community Care Campaign

Nestlé USA employees wholeheartedly support Nestlé’s annual “Community Care Campaign.”
In addition to volunteering their time, Nestlé USA employees wholeheartedly support Nestlé’s annual “Community Care Campaign” with monetary contributions to United Way, Reading Is Fundamental, Nestlé’s Adopt-A-School program, American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association, and many more organizations. With the Nestlé USA Foundation match, contributions go even farther in helping our communities grow and thrive.
Food Donations

Nestlé USA plants and distribution centers work with local Feeding America-affiliated food banks to supply products on an ongoing basis.
Feeding America (formerly named America’s Second Harvest) is the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity. Through its network of more than 200 member food banks, Feeding America annually provides assistance to more than 25 million people in need.
Nestlé USA has partnered with Feeding America since 1997, and we have had a relationship with the Cleveland Food Bank since 1979. Nestlé USA plants and distribution centers work with local Feeding America-affiliated food banks to supply products on an ongoing basis. Recently, Nestlé USA made a multi-year financial donation to the N.E. Arkansas Food Bank, which is part of the Feeding America network. This is the second food bank to benefit from Nestlé’s donations, as the Cleveland Food Bank also received a financial donation. We are proud that they have named their freezer “Nestlé” in honor of our support.
During the past four years, Nestlé USA has donated more than 36 million pounds of food to 127 food banks in nearly every state in the country.
Partnerships: Reading Is Fundamental (RIF)

Students at Frank del Olmo Elementary School in Los Angeles, Calif. selecting books at Nestlé sponsored RIF program.
Each year hundreds of Nestlé employees give their Community Care dollars to support Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the nation’s largest literacy organization. Over 25,000 students in 20 states benefit annually from the partnership between Nestlé and RIF that brings new, free books and motivational literacy programs to children. “We are proud to be associated with RIF,” said Ken Bentley, Vice President, Community Affairs, Nestle USA. “Books from RIF open up the world for children to experience a broader range of possibilities. I want to thank all of our employees for their contributions and helping to make the lives of our children a little brighter.”
