Dreyer's Slow Churned 'A Taste of Recovery™' Promotion Offers Americans $100,000 for One Day of Scooping and a Chance to Fulfill Dreams
In 1929, Dreyer's created Rocky Road ice cream to coax smiles during the Great Depression; 80 years later, it's time for another bowl of hope
OAKLAND, Calif., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Call it a case of ice cream irony, but 80 years after Dreyer's introduced Rocky Road to give people something to smile about during the Great Depression, America is suffering through a second economic meltdown and in dire need of another bowl of hope.
Building on its Rocky Road legacy, this June Dreyer's will debut a new Slow Churned® Light Ice Cream flavor to tickle America's taste buds and deliver a double scoop of optimism. To launch the new flavor, the company is offering one lucky person an opportunity to earn a cool $100,000 for one day of dishing out ice cream and smiles to fellow Americans this summer.
The winner of Dreyer's Slow Churned "A Taste of Recovery" promotion will be able to use the $100,000 paycheck to pursue his or her American dream. What's your dream? Owning your own business? Going back to school to learn new skills? Buying a house for your family?
If you're an ice cream lover, here's your chance to make your dream come true. Simply visit www.icecream.com May 4th - May 27th, 2009 and answer the following three questions (no more than 150 words per answer):
- Why are you entering to win an opportunity to be Dreyer's "A Taste of Recovery" Spokesperson and $100,000?
- Tell us why you deserve and/or need this money?
- How would you spend the $100,000 to pursue your dream?
Five finalists will be selected for a second round of "interviews." Dreyer's will send each finalist a video camera to create and submit a home-made video explaining why he or she wants to be Dreyer's "A Taste of Recovery" Ice Cream Spokesperson and how they would use this experience as a platform to pursue their dream and encourage others to do the same. Finalists will also scoop up a year's supply of ice cream. The winner will be announced in late June.
"My job is a dream come true, and I've been very fortunate to spend more than 40 years working with the ultimate pick-me-up...ice cream!" said John Harrison, Official Taster for Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream. "Share your dream with us and you may be scooping your way to a brighter future."
More About the Birth of Dreyer's Rocky Road:
At the time of Rocky Road's birth in 1929, almost all ice cream was made in three flavors - vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry - and was always served as sundaes. Bill Dreyer added walnuts (later replaced with almonds) to his chocolate ice cream and, using his wife's sewing shears, cut marshmallows into bite-sized pieces to make the first batch of Rocky Road. Bill Dreyer and Joseph Edy picked a flavor name to give folks something to smile about in the face of the Great Depression. Rocky Road became America's first blockbuster flavor and remains one of the best-selling flavors of all time. Bill Dreyer invented a number of other flavors that are still made today, including Toasted Almond and Peppermint Stick.
