How does Nestlé approach water stewardship?

Water Stewardship

At Nestlé, we are striving for a more sustainable future, towards a healthier planet, a stronger and more responsible society and a thriving economy. Ultimately, our goal is to leave the world better than we found it.

As part of that mission, we are dedicated to using water more efficiently, treating discharge water effectively and protecting watersheds in our communities. We believe good water stewardship, sound water conservation practices and community engagement are essential to running a successful and sustainable business.

How do you conserve water in your manufacturing facilities?

Building on more than a decade of efforts to generate zero waste and use energy and water more efficiently, we are continuing to transform our operations to make sure we produce and transport our products in the most sustainable way while also working to benefit the communities in which we live and operate.

We perform regular assessments of local water resources and water use inside and outside our factories, including for possible future risks. We engage with stakeholders and monitor external research findings.

Here are some of the ways we’re tackling water conservation in our facilities:

  • Our Carnation facility in Modesto, California returns more water to the community than it uses through a “water positive” process. It is also the first dairy processing facility in the U.S. to earn Alliance for Water Stewardship Standard (AWS) certification.
  • All of our Acqua Panna sourcing sites are Alliance for Water Stewardship certified.
  • In 2022, our Gerber facility in Fort Smith, Arkansas implemented a cooling tower water treatment system that has saved 14,000 cubic meters of water annually.
  • Our new beverage manufacturing facility in Glendale, AZ is being designed to be water efficient. This includes using water recycling technology and processes that improve water efficiency during production. The facility is being constructed with the capability to reuse up to 75% of its treated process water for factory related utility processes.
