LOS ANGELES, Calif

Following its debut at the Los Angeles Film Festival, the documentary short, Crafted – directed by Morgan Spurlock, who was previously nominated for an Academy Award® – is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime Instant Video. The vibrant and honest film explores the evolution and shared philosophies of the modern artisan, uncovering what drives them to create and why their craft endures in the modern age. Crafted is exclusively available for four months at Amazon.com/Crafted.

"Creating high-quality products that hold meaning – from making food to crafting tools – takes a relentless level of commitment and passion, particularly in our society where disposability reigns supreme,” explained Spurlock. “I am thrilled that the stories of the five artisans in Crafted are now available for everyone to watch.”

Spurlock ventured to the never-before-seen worlds of these craftsmen who vary by trade and geography, but share a passion to create. He takes viewers on a journey to meet five craftsmen who challenge themselves to make handcrafted goods that set them apart from the rest:

  • Yuji Nagatani, a seventh generation head of family run pottery producer Nagatani-en, located in the remote mountainous region of Iga, Japan. Nagatani spent four years testing more than 1,000 donabe rice cooker prototypes to bring innovation to donabe cooking, while continuing his ancestors’ traditions.
  • Cortney Burns and Nick Balla, the chefs behind San Francisco restaurant Bar Tartine and authors of the 2015 James Beard Award-winning cookbook, Bar Tartine: Techniques & Recipes, rely heavily on local produce to painstakingly make ingredients and create all dishes in-house, including aged cheeses, spices, koji and bottarga.
  • Luke Snyder and David Van Wyk, of Bloodroot Blades in Arnoldsville, Georgia, forge their blades and work with a variety of materials that may have otherwise been discarded. Through meticulous testing and modern technology, this duo makes some of the most sought-after handmade knives in the world, with a waiting list spanning more than two years.

Crafted was produced by Spurlock’s Warrior Poets Productions and is distributed in the U.S. by Kinonation. The Häagen-Dazs® brand commissioned the unbranded film as a way of paying homage to its artisan roots that still guide its principles today.

Amazon Prime Instant Video members can watch the film for free and non-members will be able to purchase the film on Amazon Prime Instant Video.
