AT U.S. MILITARY’S REQUEST, LIBBY’S® PUMPKIN SHIPS FIRST CASES

Back to Press releases
SOLON, Ohio

To kick-off the holiday season and celebrate Veterans Day, LIBBY’S® Pumpkin wants to thank our troops for their service. LIBBY’S is proud to announce that the military will be enjoying pumpkin pie this holiday season as the first shipments of pumpkin were delivered to our troops overseas to ensure they’d get to celebrate with everyone’s favorite Thanksgiving dessert.

Due to abnormally heavy rains that made harvesting nearly impossible in 2009, canned pumpkin supplies were in short supply across the country beginning last winter. However, with the hard work of the dedicated pumpkin farmers in Morton, Illinois – the pumpkin capital of the world! - and some cooperation from Mother Nature, the 2010 harvest brought pumpkin back in time for the holidays.

“Earlier this year, the military’s purchasing office requested the first shipments of LIBBY’S Pumpkin,” said Evan Lunde, Marketing Manager for LIBBY’S. “Because it’s for the troops, we were happy to oblige. It took some advance planning to allow enough time for the pumpkin to arrive at military bases around the world before the holidays,“ Lunde added. “But we’re very excited that our men and women in uniform will get to enjoy traditional pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving.”

Pumpkin also returned to local grocer’s shelves in late September and was met with overwhelming excitement from consumers – more than 50 million pumpkin pies are baked with LIBBY’S Pumpkin each year and if you were to put those end to end, they’d stretch across the country more than twice!

LIBBY’S is committed to producing only the highest quality, 100% pure pumpkin for consumers. A nutritional powerhouse, pumpkin’s popularity as an everyday ingredient continues to increase. It is an excellent source of fiber, high in vitamin A, naturally gluten-free, sodium-free, low fat, and low calorie. An incredibly versatile ingredient, pumpkin can be enjoyed by simply mixing in a spoonful to applesauce, oatmeal or yogurt for extra nutrition and flavor. Pumpkin can also be used to create flavorful recipes like pumpkin soups, breads, desserts…and most importantly, in pumpkin pie!
